Student Work Permits
Individuals under 18 years of age wishing to obtain employment must have the appropriate "Combined Offer of Employment and Work Permit/Age Certification" form completed and signed. Students and parents need to complete Section I of the appropriate form and the employer completes Section II. Once section I and section II have been completed, the forms must be signed by a Michigan School Official.
Obtain the appropriate form online or you may send an email to Jane Fenslau and request a form be sent to you via email. If you request by email, please indicate which of the two forms you need.
Submit the form with Section I completed to the potential employer. Have the potential employer complete Section II (Offer of Employment) and return the form to the student.
Once Section I and Section II have been completed, the form can be brought to the Administration and Services Center, Lapeer High School or Zemmer Campus. Please note that if you are not a current LCS student, in order to sign the form, we will need to have a copy of a picture ID or a Birth Certificate.
Return the completed form (Section I, II and III) to your potential employer.

***YOUTH WORK PERMIT PROCESS IS CHANGING***
Effective October 2, 2026
A new Michigan law (Public Act 196 of 2024) is changing how work permits for minors are processed. Currently, schools are responsible for issuing and revoking work permits.
However, starting October 2, 2026, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) will take over this responsibility.
Key Changes:
New Online System: Minors and employers must use LEO’s free registration website to apply for and process work permits.
Work Hour Restrictions:
14- and 15-year-olds may only work between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. from June 1 to Labor Day and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. the rest of the year.
During the school year, work is limited to 3 hours per day and 18 hours per week.
When school is not in session, minors may work up to 40 hours per week.
Simplified Process for Schools & Employers: Schools will no longer issue work permits, reducing administrative responsibilities.
More details on the new system will be available as the transition approaches. For more information, visit Michigan LEO's website
